Alzheimer is a disease associated with the breakdown of nervous tissue in the brain, giving rise to a dementia in the patient. This seems to be one of the most common conditions of older people in the Western world.
Age is the most important known risk factor for Alzheimer's Disease. The number of people with the disease doubles every 5 years beyond age 65. Family history is another risk factor.
At first, the only symptom may be mild forgetfulness. In this stage, people may have trouble remembering recent events, activities, or the names of familiar people or things. They may not be able to solve simple math problems. Later on in stage two, people may forget how to brush their teeth, or comb their hair. They can non longer think clearly and begin having problems speaking, understanding, reading, and writing. Alzheimer's Disease then progresses to where the patient may become anxious and aggressive. They may wonder off from home and need care around the clock.
